So in September there are two weeks of Banned Books Week (one week is Canadian, the other is the American one.) The Biblio Blogazine has challenged readers to take this opportunity to read some banned books! Since there are quite of few of these on my TBR list I’m going to try to read at least one of them next month.
Here are a few of my options:
- The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
- A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle
- Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
- Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
- The Giver by Lois Lowry
Here is a list of frequently challenged books. Let me know if there is something on this list that I just have to read!

A wrinkle in time was banned? What on earth for? Difficult to know sometimes what to think.

Fahrenheit 451 is one of the best books I’ve ever read, and scariest (what with being a book lover and all)! Read Handmaid’s Tale earlier on, which I thought was incredible as well.
Catcher in the Rye is my all-time favorite. I actually have three copies of it: one at work, one at home, and one at my parents’ place, just so that there’s always a copy at hand.
The Witches is my favorite Roald Dahl, ahead of Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, and Matilda.
This looks like fun – and most of the “banned books” turn out to be very thought-provoking, and scary.

I love your list!
Exercising your freedom to read occurs every single time you pick up a book, and especially if that book tis one some people would like to see go away – permanently.
Thank you for choosing to participate. I will post your list and a link you your blog.
And really, do not pressure yourself to read all of them. Just by committing to consciously read banned/challenged books makes a difference, and that is what this is all about.

I read The Handmaid’s Tale last year in class and I loved it. Atwood is an amazing and powerful writer – the book is a great discussion starter!
I love the idea of two weeks dedicated to banned books. I’ll have to chose some off the list for myself! Your list looks great.

You probably already know what my suggestion is: Fahrenheit 451.
A Wrinkle in Time was one of my most-loved books as a child, we’ve read The Giver for book club, and I just finished A Handmaid’s Tale a few months ago, but I’d go with Ray Bradbury given the above choices.
